Needle Sensors
or as they are commonly referred to, Immersion sensors.

Sheathed Thermocouples
Sheathed thermocouples are similar in construction to electric heating elements. Ceramic insulators are strung on the wires, the sheath is drawn over the insulated wires,
this causes compaction of the entire assembly. The initial geometry is crucial to getting a highly reliable final product. EDL sets the highest standards in the thermocouple manufacturing industry, by manufacturing only the highest quality sheathed thermocouple stock.

Sheath
EDL uses the highest quality alloys whose molecular structure dramatically decreases the chance of thermocouple contamination, thus, ensuring longer life cycle and lower failure rates.

Insulator
The use of the highest quality compaction grade Magnesium Oxide assures the required insulator inertness. Inertness is crucial in thermocouple applications to avoid the migration of atoms between the sheath, the insulator and the thermocouple wires, that may cause sensor decalibration.

Junction
All junctions are brazed or TIG welded, unlike that of many companies who crimp their junctions to reduce the production costs. Brazing or welding the junctions increases impermeability of the sheath, thus, creating greater confidence in temperature measurement.

Cold End Seal
High temperature cement is used to provide a solid barrier to moisture and contamination in the back end of the thermocouple.

2 Internal Needle Constructions Available

Grounded Junction

The grounded junction is the standard construction because it has the thermocouple integral at the Sheath closure, thus causing the least thermal lag.

Ungrounded Junction

Ungrounded junctions isolate the thermocouple junction from the Sheath closure thus assuring electrical isolation from the Sheath, but it is at the sacrifice of some thermal lag.

EDL Standard Needles use a grounded tip design for instantaneous response. Needles with an ungrounded construction are also available. In environments with static, stray EMF's, or monitoring conductive solutions, the ungrounded needle will often prove to be be more suitable.

Sheath Alloy Types
Sheath alloys are often required in different material types to suit your specific application.  The following is a list of sheath materials and their corresponding EDL codes. There may be an increase in the cost of the thermocouple sensor due to the price of the sheath material and the required manufacturing changes that are associated with it. Please contact our sales department for a quotation on items that are not in our catalog.
