Cryo-Cal®
The EDL Cryo-Cal® is an affordable alternative to both the Argon triple point and other similar cryogenic calibrators. The Cryo-Cal® utilizes the phase change point of liquid nitrogen to establish a reference temperature of approximately -196°C or 77K. A direct comparison to a calibrated SPRT must be made, as the cell is open to the atmosphere causing slight variations in temperature due to changes in pressure. There are four Teflon® lined holes which provide access to the internal system. Comparisons are accomplished through the use of a comparison block being completely immersed in the cryogenic liquid contained within a super-insulated vacuum dewar. A custom designed and injection molded polycarbonate lid supports the entire system while serving as an insulator to the outside atmosphere. The custom lid also reduces the heat conducted through the mounting system. During the course of use some condensation of moisture in the environmental air will occur, this, in small amounts, does not affect performance but occasionally the dewar and equalization block must be cleaned. This is very easy to do with the Cryo-Cal® as our lid and internal block can be removed by releasing two external latches and simply lifting the entire system out of the dewar. Another unique feature of the Cryo-Cal® is the gold plated equalization block; the gold plating greatly reduces corrosion and oxidation of the oxygen free hard copper block. The gold plating also helps to reduce the energy absorbed by the block due to energy reflected by the highly polished inside walls of the dewar. In addition to liquid nitrogen the Cryo-Cal® may be used with a mixture of solid carbon dioxide and ethanol alcohol. The two substances can be mixed until they form a thick gel, after mixing, the block and lid may be replaced forming a reference cell for a temperature of approximately -79°C or 194K. To improve stability in the system heat fluxes must be minimized. Ultimately the influence of this heat conduction path will affect the stability of sensors. To help reduce the influence of heat conducted through the center support rod we have placed a wide groove around the center of the equalization block, this allows the cooling medium to flow into the groove preventing heat conduction between the connecting rod and the block.
